The Snow and the Architect - 25 years since the Games, it's Magical !

The Snow and the Architect
Winter sports resorts of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region

The exhibition The Snow and the Architect celebrates, with approximately sixty large format photographs, the architectural and urban history of six winter sports resorts in the Savoie and Haute-Savoie : Megève – Courchevel 1850 – Flaine – Avoriaz – Les Arcs – Les Karellis.

These six resorts, each with its unique character and innovations, reflect the diversity and wealth of development in the Alps throughout the 20th century. They are the work of urbanist architects, genuine pioneers, such as : Henry Jacques Le Même, Laurent Chappis, Denys Pradelle, Marcel Breuer, Gaston Regairaz, Guy Rey-Millet, Jacques Labro and of course Charlotte Perriand.

To promote this regional cultural heritage, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region has sought the help of a talented photographer from the Service of the Inventory, Eric Dessert, with a photographic campaign over 2010 and 2011. His practised eye invites us to (re)discover these unique architectural adventures, bold, innovative and human.

As an observer of light and form, of time and space, of the human and the material, the photographer places himself as a witness to a seasonal construct which can appear ephemeral in such an imposing environment. An environment that is so dominant, at times hostile, and which constrains its inhabitants at all times.

25 years since the Games, it's Magical !

The Olympic legacy is alive !
Throughout the year of 2017, the Maison des Jeux Olympiques d’hiver will celebrate the 25 years since the XVIth Albertville and Savoie Winter Olympic Games. Twenty five years on, the sites that hosted the events of the Games in 1992 have developed their potential and reputations : Albertville - Les Arcs – Brides-Les-Bains – La Léchère – Courchevel – Les Menuires – Méribel – Moûtiers – Pralognan-La-Vanoise – La Plagne – Les Saisies – La Tania – Tignes – Val d’Isère ; all still stand on the top step of the podium !
The Olympic facilities, intended to promote the sustainable development of land and facilities, allowed large projects in road infrastructure, and moved the Savoie some 15 years ahead. This helped the region to further confirm its position as an international winter sports destination.
Magic, the mischievous star shaped mascot of the XVIth Olympic Winter Games, will serve as the guide that ensures that this Olympic legacy continues.
The Savoie has already kept it alive for 25 years !
